East Tennessee State University

East Tennessee State University, also known as ETSU, began as a small college to educate teachers in 1911 and grew each year until it became a liberal arts university in 1963.  ETSU, located in Johnson City, offers many courses of study over 11 colleges within the university including online courses. The school also has two off-campus centers in Kingsport and Elizabethton, TN.

ETSU is located within 80 buildings on a 340 acre campus with a breathtaking view of the Appalachian Mountains.  The scenic campus provides the perfect collegiate atmosphere for students, whether they are doing academic work or enjoying an afternoon of recreation outside.  In addition to being an inviting and beautiful atmosphere, ETSU’s academics are its main focus.  A wide variety of course studies in the undergraduate and graduate levels are available at the university.  Some of the more unique programs include programs on Appalachian Studies, Bluegrass, rural medicine, and the country’s only graduate program in Storytelling.

School pride is strong at ETSU and especially so for the school’s home team, the Buccaneers.  ETSU offers men’s and women’s athletics in a range of sports from basketball, soccer, and tennis, to track and field, cross country, and golf, among many others.  Sporting events are frequently held at the University’s very own mini-dome, which is formally known as the ETSU/Mountain States Health Alliance Athletic Center.

Several museums and galleries are housed on the university’s campus: The Reece Museum, The ETSU and General Shale Brick Natural History Museum, and the Slocumb Galleries.  The Reece Museum is the location of ETSU’s Art Department’s permanent collection of works.  ETSU’s Natural History Museum is located a short distance from campus in Gray, Tennessee and welcomes community members of all ages in addition to students to come learn about science and the earth’s history.  The Slocumb Galleries are dedicated to exhibiting student work on both the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Students’ art is featured in rotating exhibitions all school year long.
