Bristol, Tennessee is located in Sullivan County and is Bristol, Virginia’s twin city; the two cities are divided in the middle of downtown by State Street.  This historic southern city is currently home to 26,702 residents.  Bristol is part of the greater Tri-Cities area in Tennessee, which also includes Kingsport and Johnson City. If you are considering renting an apartment in Bristol, the following information may help you get to know the city better!

Before Bristol existed as an American city, the area was inhabited by Cherokee and Yuchi tribes.  In the 1800’s, the land where Bristol now stands was on a plantation owned by Rev. James King.  In 1856, the city was founded by Mr. King’s son-in-law, Joseph R. Anderson and was built around the connection of two railroad lines.

During the Civil War Bristol was divided, but later became a supporter of the Confederate army.  Bristol had an important location at the convergence of railroad lines, and during the war both train stations ended up being burned down.  These railroad lines brought wounded soldiers to the city to seek medical attention at the Exchange Hotel, which was used as an army hospital during the war.  Bristol’s East Hill Cemetery has a special section dedicated to those Confederate and Union soldiers who lost their lives in Bristol during the Civil War.

In the twentieth century, Bristol became famous for being the birthplace of country music.  The first recordings of country music were made by the Victor Talking Machine Company of regional and local musicians in Bristol.  After Bristol became famous for country music, local radio stations frequently featured big-name country and bluegrass groups like Flatt and Scruggs and the Stanley Brothers.  The Birthplace of Country Music Museum was established recently to commemorate the town’s musical history.

Today, Bristol is a charming southern city with a unique past.  It offers a friendly small town feel and picturesque scenery to residents and visitors alike.  The birthplace of country music’s rich musical history continues on with new groups and performances all year round, making this city, “a good place to live”.
